Program Learning Outcomes - 174

Program learning outcomes outline what Mohawk's graduates need to know and be able to do after they complete this program.

Initially, most program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU) in consultation with employers and educators. Now, they are reviewed and updated during program review, in consultation with employers, graduates, and current students.

Vocational Standards

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Adhere to and apply legal and legislative requirements as well as professional, organizational and ethical standards related to advanced investigations and enforcement contexts.
  2. Utilize effective crime scene procedures in the securing, searching, recording, collecting and preserving of evidence for the preparation of case documents.
  3. Evaluate the relevance of information obtained through advanced investigative and enforcement techniques.
  4. Apply knowledge of specialized investigative methods, accurately and fully, to the enforcement and prosecution of offences.
  5. Fulfill the role and responsibilities of an effective advanced investigation and enforcement officer, including generating appropriate, accurate and comprehensive reports and legal documentation.
  6. Comply with policies, procedures and legislation applicable to advanced investigations and enforcement in routine and complex contexts.
  7. Develop, implement and evaluate leadership, management, operational, administration and risk management skills as they pertain to various law enforcement workplaces.
  8. Utilize effective approach and tactical communication procedures and knowledge in routine and complex contexts of advanced investigations.
  9. Communicate professionally and effectively in all aspects of investigative and enforcement activities.
  10. Utilize effective critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making and multitasking skills in complex situations such as counter surveillance and emergency and disaster planning.
  11. Utilize appropriate conflict and crisis management techniques during dispute resolution and in potentially dangerous situations.
  12. Use effectively and when required, recommend appropriately, a variety of technical aids in the context of surveillance and counter surveillance.
  13. Use various current and related technologies to complete evidence preparation for the administrative requirements of the justice system.
  14. Build and maintain positive relations with the workplace and the community.
  15. Meet or exceed the industry standard for physical activity, fitness and lifestyle standards.

Essential Employability Skills

All graduates with the following Ontario College credentials, Ontario College Certificate, Ontario College Diploma and Ontario College Advanced Diploma, must be able to reliably demonstrate Essential Employability Skills in a combination of the following 11 skill areas:

  1. Communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in the written, spoken and visual form that fulfills the purpose and meets the needs of the audience.
  2. Respond to written, spoken or visual messages in a manner that ensures effective communication.
  3. Execute mathematical operations accurately.
  4. Apply a systematic approach to solve problems.
  5. Use a variety of thinking skills to anticipate and solve problems.
  6. Locate, select, organize and document information using appropriate technology and information systems.
  7. Analyze, evaluate and apply relevant information from a variety of sources.
  8. Show respect for diverse opinions, values, belief systems and contributions of others.
  9. Interact with others in groups or teams in ways that contribute to effective working relationships and the achievement of goals.
  10. Manage the use of time and other resources to complete projects.
  11. Take responsibility for one's own actions, decisions and consequences.
